Years ago, while in Nigeria, I strolled through Onitsha’s Main Market, one of the largest in Africa. I’ve never seen so many items for sale in the same place. It’s so big that other markets have spun off from it.
Packed to the gills with both people and items for sale, it offers everything from clothing and computers to construction materials and car parts. It’s seemingly a one-stop shop for anything you could possibly need. While I was in the clothing and accessories area, a man beckoned me over. He was surrounded with jewelry and trinkets that seemed nice enough, but that wasn’t what he wanted to show me. From underneath a table, he pulled a startling necklace of Congo rubies that made my jaw literally drop. I’d never seen so many rubies in one necklace before.
