Alexandrite is a gem cloaked in mystique. Since its discovery in 1834, it’s held a captive audience for its unusual trait of changing color. The mystical stone appears green in the daylight and turns a purple hue when exposed to incandescent light. The extreme scarcity of this gem combined with its changing powers makes it one of the most coveted stones in the jewelry world. In terms of rarity, alexandrite may well outrank nearly all other known gemstones. Natural alexandrite is rarer than diamonds and more costly than most emeralds, rubies and sapphires. The original Russian mines were depleted by the late 1890s and no new sources of alexandrite were discovered until 1987.
We were intrigued and so we sought out and secured an exceptional collection of alexandrite gems. We then had them prong set and surrounded them with the sparkle of white diamonds for an awe-evoking show.
